Event Two

Parable of the Sower Study Group: Lessons from Octavia Butler on How to Survive (& Thrive)

For Black Folks

Oct 22, 2025 - Jan 21, 2026
5-7 PM PT | 8-10 PM ET

Why Now:
As our world faces ongoing climate catastrophe, political violence, and attacks on queer, trans, and Black futures, Octavia E. Butler’s Parable series feels less like fiction and more like prophecy. This study circle is an invitation to gather with others who are ready to learn from Butler’s visionary work—not as escapism, but as a map for building new worlds rooted in care, interdependence, and resistance. We will explore abolitionist and liberatory themes such as community-led survival, mutual aid, and the power of shaping change rather than reacting to it. In a time when oppressive systems are actively erasing our stories and bodies, Butler’s words remind us that we have the power to write the future ourselves.

Who It’s For:

  • Black folks seeking community-rooted approaches to liberation

  • Readers, activists, caregivers, and dreamers wanting to connect literature to real-life strategies for survival and transformation

  • People hungry for radical imagination in the face of despair

What You’ll Gain:

  • A deeper understanding of Butler’s Parable as a tool for movement-building

  • Space to practice abolitionist and decolonized ways of being in community

  • Practical strategies for building resilience, solidarity, and vision in restrictive times

Sliding scale:
Supported: $180
